Showing compassion to others is not always an easy task. Everyone has problems and issues and quirks. Sometimes we become so immersed in our own lives that we tend to act in selfish or disinterested ways. However, our lives and the lives of others can be immensely blessed and improved by taking the time to show a little compassion and love, to exercise our empathy ”muscles”. Here are three stories to help you reflect on the need for compassion and kindness to those around you.
Anna Sandell: The Healing Power of Service
Scott Sandell Daughter, Anna, is a radiant young woman who suffered a snowmobile accident in 2021. She was placed in the Intensive Care Unit due to severe and serious injuries. Almost immediately, people from Upper Valley, VT started to bring food and meals to the Sandell family, at a time when the pandemic made it difficult to obtain restaurant carry-out or other meals. Not long after these small acts of compassion and kindness began, and with the support of Anna’s parents, a food donation campaign was started in honor of Anna and her healing. This organization, Upper Valley Haven, helps feed people in poverty.
Anna’s accident was a tragedy for her family, but amidst the pain, her loved ones were served by others, which inspired an even great act of compassion toward others in need. Compassion is most powerful and necessary when things are hard, not when everything goes as planned.
Becky Hoffler: Service and Sacrifice
Becky Hoffler was fortunate during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was able to keep her job by working from home. But her out-going spirit and compassion helped her find an opportunity to serve and fulfill a need she observed. One day, after talking to her grandfather on the phone, she learned how hard and frightening it was for elderly people to go to the store. At that time, they were the most at-risk population.
Becky didn’t hesitate and went out to help her elderly neighbors with groceries. She handed out flyers and posted on Facebook that she was able to give a hand to those that needed it. During her lunch breaks, she would make grocery runs. She brought relief and happiness to the homes of those who were alone and afraid. Compassion is not about waiting for the perfect chance, it is about creating the perfect opportunity to show love and kindness.
Jake Austin: Soap and Service
What Jake Austin does for others shows that compassion comes in different packages. Austin put remodeled his truck and transformed it into a mobile bathroom. With practical technology, this amazing unit, which was dubbed “Shower to the People” helps the homeless to get clean. Inside the truck are two showers, sinks and mirrors that make it possible for them to enjoy a warm shower. Personal care items such as soap, shampoo, and toothbrushes are freely distributed by Austin and his assistants.
Jake Austin thinks that showering is a simple thing that restores hope and dignity to those who usually are rejected because of their appearance or smell. Compassion is not about changing the world all at once, but just one person at a time.
