Premier League Worst summer signings XI 2017-18
We’ve seen enough dialogue on what the most effective Premier League XI for the season is. It’s time currently to maneuver over the Salah’s and Diamond State Burins, and take a glance at some players WHO were expected to shine, however over up falling smack down on their faces..
Here’s the Premier League flop XI for the 2017/18 campaign. There could be a lot of names thrown other than the ones mentioned here, but hey, that’s something we’re not going to be able to avoid.
Joe Hart (West Ham United)
The former England number 1’s fall from grace has been spectacular. After being ousted by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, he spent an underwhelming season at Torino in Serie A last season. This season, he was signed by West Ham as a potential upgrade to Adrian. Unfortunately, he has been anything but that. He conceded ten goals in his first three league appearances, and has had to share responsibilities with Adrian, making 19 appearances compared to the Spaniard’s 17. Hart has failed to shine big-time, and has made a lot of untimely and basic errors. It will be very surprising both to see him feature for England in Russia this year, as well as keep goal at Man City ever again.
Cedric Soares (Southampton)
Soares started the season in dreadful fashion and in December, had more individual errors leading to an opposition goal than any other player. He has steadied the ship since, but has still not lived up to his own heights from the previous season. With The Saints looking very likely to get relegated, Soares’ inclusion in this team is more than justified.
Victor Lancelot (Manchester United)
Manchester United spent £35 million to bring in the Swede from Benfica in the summer, and he was tipped as the able partner for Eric Bailly at the heart of the defense. After an error-strewn start though, he was quickly replaced by Chris Smalling. He is still young and could yet be a star at Old Trafford once he gets used to life in the Premier League, but certainly a lot more was expected from him this season.
David Luiz (Chelsea)
After being an integral part of the title-winning team last season, Luiz seems to have had a falling out with Antonio Conte. He has played only 10 teams in the league, and despite reportedly being out with an injury, there are question marks over his absence. He has been replaced by Andreas Christensen in the starting line-up, and the Dane doesn’t look like being displace anytime soon.
Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
Shaw has fallen prey to Mourinho’s dislike, and is almost set to leave Old Trafford in the summer. Makeshift left-back Ashley Young has been preferred to the Englishman, who has made only nine league appearances despite being available for most of the campaign.
Renato Sanchez (Swansea City)
On loan from Bayern Munich, Sanchez was expected to be one of the brightest prospects in the Premier League this season. Instead, he turned into quite the opposite. He dreadful right from the start, and was notably substituted at half-time against Chelsea after passing the ball to the advertising boards on the side of the pitch. After 12 league appearances, he suffered a hamstring injury in January and is now back in his hometown of Portugal to recuperate. From what we saw of him, it is unlikely he’ll be playing either for Bayern or for Swansea next year.
Paul Pogba (Manchester United)
This may be a controversial addition because there is no denying Pogba’s talent. But he has been below-average at best over the course of the season, despite showing flashes of brilliance here and there. Jose Mourinho still hasn’t found his best position, and the Frenchman has found it difficult to exert his influence on games when it has mattered most. And of course, he cost United £90 million. Six league goals is hardly any way to repay such a ridiculously gargantuan amount of money.
Timeous Bakayoko (Chelsea)
Chelsea spent around £40 million on bringing Bakayoko to the club from Monaco. After impressing in the Champions League last season, he was seen as an upgrade to the outgoing Nemanja Matic. He has been anything but. The Frenchman has just not been able to get to terms with Premier League football, and has been lethargic and demotivated right from the start. Despite being afforded opportunity after opportunity by Antonio Conte, there have been no signs of improvement. Clearly, someone needs to step in and shake him up a bit, because at the current rate, he will be shown the Stamford Bridge very soon.
Make Bireme Doug (Stoke City)
Stoke really needed Diouf to step it up this season, with the club facing relegation. The likes of Jese, Sheridan Shapiro and Joe Allen have certainly worked to create opportunities to score, but their striker has been missing chances at the rate of knots. Diouf has scored six league goals so far, but should have had a whole lot more. The Potters will be playing in the Championship next season, and should be on the lookout for a better striker if they want to return to the top-flight soon.
Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace)
From Diouf we come to a striker whose poor form didn’t fatally impact his team’s fortunes in the end. But it easily could have. Benteke was clearly going to be the main man for Palace, having scored almost a third of their Premier League goals the season before. But incredibly, the Belgian has found the back of the net only three times this campaign. It’s not like he’s been injured either. He has just not been converting his chances, some of which have been extremely easy. This was a big reason for The Eagles’ dreadful start to the season when they lost their opening seven matches. Fortunately though, the likes of Luka Milivojevic, Wilfred Zahra and James McArthur have taken up the goals coring responsibility and taken Palace through to safety.
Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)
Despite the fact that he had an improbable season at the Emirates, it became terribly apparent to everybody that Glen Gephardt wished to depart Arsenal. He scored seven goals in nineteen league appearances for The Gunners, however even his own club’s fans were soliciting for his sale because of the negative vibes he was carrying. He created the switch to Manchester United in Jan, citing the rationale to win additional tableware. He has been Moreno’s first-choice leftist from the off, however has did not deliver, marking simply doubly for his new club to this point. It remains to be seen if he will pull it back next year, however this season, he has undoubtedly been a large flop.
Why Arsenal must replace Arsene Wenger with Carlo Ancelotti as soon as possible
It isn’t often that a top, top European manager becomes available a few weeks into the start of the season. With Bayern Munich sacking Carlo Ancelotti last week, that rare occurrence is upon us.
The Italian has been one of the most successful coaches in the continent for over a decade now, winning three Champions League trophies along with league titles in Italy, England, France and Germany. Bayern’s underwhelming start to the season though, led to his downfall, culminating in a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain last week.
Ancelotti is the closest you’d come to a perfect modern-day manager. He has been thoroughly loved by the fans everywhere he’s been, had a successful playing career and coaches an open, attacking and entertaining style of football. His Chelsea team of 2009/10 scored a record 103 league goals, while his Real Madrid side of 2014/15 managed 118 in La Liga.
Arsenal must act NOW to sign him up
Arsenal have been holding to Arsene Wenger for quite a while now, despite facing huge amounts of backlash from fans. The Gunners’ lack of success over the last decade was compounded by their inability to qualify for the Champions League last season. This was the first time they had finished outside the top 4 since Wenger’s first full season in charge back in 1997, and the supporters saw this as a new low, one the Frenchman couldn’t recover from.
There have been talks of Diego Simeone and Massimiliano Allegri replacing Wenger at the Emirates in the past couple of years. These managers though, follow very different philosophies from the one the Arsenal manager has established over the past two decades. Their tactical, calculative approach calls for a more defensively sound and counter-attacking style, while Wenger is tended towards open and expansive football.
Ancelotti will not only continue that philosophy with Arsenal, but he will also bring in the mental strength and winning mentality that they’ve lacked for so long. In his previous stint in England with Chelsea, his team was built on both flair and on raw power, with a truly terrifying midfield containing Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Michael Essien and Deco. He was able to keep these European stalwarts happy and find their best positions on the pitch. Ask any Blues fan, and he’ll tell you that the Ancelotti-era was the most enjoyable one from the point of view of a watcher.
The Arsenal board must act as soon as possible to make this switch. Ancelotti will need some time to stamp his authority on the squad, and Wenger has long overstayed his welcome anyway. There’s no time like the present.

Manchester United and Chelsea face key injury blows during World Cup qualifiers
Belgium’s Marouane Fellaini and France’s N’Golo Kante both limped out of their teams’ games with hamstring injuries. It remains to be seen how long they will be out for Man United and Chelsea, respectively.
Managers of top clubs always keep their fingers crossed during an international break, because an injury to a first-team regular is always around the corner.
This is just what happened during the World Cup qualifiers on Saturday, as Man United midfielder Marouane Fellaini was brought off in the 23rd minute in Belgium’s 4-3 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. The extent of the injury is still unknown.
The 29 year-old has surprisingly become a big part of Jose Mourinho’s side this season. With Paul Pogba out until November at least, Fellaini has been preferred to Ander Herrera alongside Nemanja Matic in midfield and has delivered with consistency thus far. The former Everton man looked set to leave Old Trafford at one point during the summer, but now things have changed.
United have a huge game at the weekend as they visit Anfield. Neighbours City are looking unstoppable at the moment, and the Red Devils need to keep winning to keep pace with Pep Guardiola’s men, who laid down a marker with a commanding victory at Stamford Bridge last week.
The injury though, could be a huge setback for Fellaini. He fights week-in, week-out for a place in the side and may find by the time he comes back that someone else has occupied that spot on a permanent basis. From United’s point of view, a midfield that looked extremely strong and powerful at the start of the season is starting to crack a bit.
Chelsea’s loss much more significant
Chelsea, on the other hand, are biting their nails over one of the most important cogs in their title-winning campaign last year.
N’Golo Kante limped off with the exact same hamstring injury in France’s 1-0 win over Bulgaria. The midfielder was able to walk off, but like Fellaini, only time will tell how bad the injury and subsequent layoff are. Chelsea travel to Crystal Palace at the weekend, and games in subsequent weeks include a double-header in the Champions League against Roma and a clash against Manchester United at home on November 5.
Antonio Conte will be sweating over the test results, as he’s already a bit short in midfield. Danny Drinkwater is expected to come back from injury any time now, so there is a bit of cover. However, there is no doubt that there is nobody in the squad that can match Kante’s energy and tenacity, vital qualities upon which the 3-4-3 system is based. Tiemoue Bakayoko is still settling into the squad, while Cesc Fabregas is more of an attacking midfielder. Drinkwater will add solidarity to the midfield when he returns, but a big reason for his success at Leicester City was Kante himself, during the title-winning season of 2016.
